It is a depiction of Ralston’s life from the book ‘Between a rock and a Hard Place’. If you are stuck with your life and lack motivation or are feeling directionless then this story has a lots to offer you. Just people like us who stroll in the park this mountaineer was having fun with the mountains and falling in love with them but he slips and falls accidentally between the gorge. The guy with full of life is now counting the hours of his death but the will to survive and the desire to demolish the boulder of his life makes him a true hero. Ralston always lived on edge just like any other mountaineer but what makes his life different and even more thrilling is beautifully portrayed by Danny Boyle in this movie. This is one of the best wilderness survival movies!

2. Life of PI

This is a fictional movie released in the year 2001. Another story based on the bestseller book by Yann Marte. Story is about a boy named Piscine Patel and a Bengali tiger who are stuck and survived in a shipwreck for 227 days after a storm hits the ship on his journey to North America via waterways. The storytelling is delineated in three parts where the first one portrays the boy’s early life, the second one about his survival experience with the animals on the shipwreck and the third one narrating this story to the officials from Japanese Ministry of Transport.

3. The Grey

This movie was released in the year 2012 starring Liam Neeson, Frank Grilo and Dermot Mulroney and is directed by Joe Carnahan. John Ottway (Liam) is working at an oil drilling company killing the wolves who tend to hinder their work, a pretty tough life indeed. He has been facing suicidal tendencies as he reconciles the painful memories and now after being a 59 year old wants to give up the dreadful pain weighing him deep down. Deciding to leave his job in Alaska and get back to his normal life, he enroots via plane and there is when the real story begins. The airplane crashes to pieces. He is saved from the crash but jammed in the territory of rebellious and revengeful wolves. His fight made him recall the pain once again and how he overcomes this grief is the transformation that will be witnessed by the viewers. The confrontation is not just with the gray wolves but with himself too.

Listed in the critically appreciated top 10 best movies of the year 2007, it shows the different moods of Mother Nature that is explored by McCandless (Emile Hirsch). Leaving behind the regime and refashioning himself, he decides not to be in touch with any of his family members and have fun with on his own. It is his journey of self-realization which is taught to him by varying behaviour of nature that he comes across in his wilderness adventure of two years. A story that justifies “Your roots lies with your Kindred”. One of the best wilderness survival movies for me.

This movie is about a young fifteen year old teen boy who is jumbled up in the maze and for whom dare or die is the ultimate call for his life. All he knows is his name. All the way through his expedition he acknowledges that his security is at risk when he encounters with his enemies. Solving the maze and finding the hidden denotation of the scenario is where the story will lead you. The movie was a success in the year 2014 and has a Part 2 by the name ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch trials’ released in the year 2015.

A documentary movie released in the year 2003 based on the book named ‘Same Name’ by Joe Simpson. It is a real life story about two mountaineers named Joe Simpson and Simon Yates. The duo have been true heroes of mountaineering and were successful to reach the summit of ‘Siula Grande’ in Peru. As they descended they were in the trap of snow’s rage, making back to their rescue home was next to impossible and the story revolves around the promptly made decisions, their loyalty, survival’s noteworthiness and how they made back home. All this will take you in abyss even more abyssal than the gorges of the mountains. One of the best wilderness survival movies ever!
